Kirtas Emmanouil

Emmanouil Kirtas holds a Diploma in Civil Engineering (1999), a Master’s degree in Seismic Design of Engineering Structures (2000), and a PhD (2007), all from the Department of Civil Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His academic career began in 2003 at the Department of Civil Structural Engineering of TEI Serres, and since 2010 he has been serving as a permanent faculty member in the Department of Civil Engineering at IHU.

He has taught courses including Soil Mechanics I & II, Foundations and Retaining Structures, Structural Modelling and Analysis, and Engineering Seismology and Earthquake Engineering, and has also contributed to teaching in the Department’s MSc programme “Interventions in Existing Buildings and Urban Complexes: Strengthening, Reuse and Spatial Regeneration”. His research interests focus on earthquake engineering, soil-structure interaction, dynamic response of soil deposits, and seismic risk assessment of structures.

He has participated in more than 15 national and European research projects, serving as Scientific Responsible of the IHU team in four of them. His current research activity focuses on the rapid seismic risk assessment of buildings and infrastructure, including European-funded projects such as REDACt (BSB, 2020–2023), EReS (UCPM, 2023–2025), and REDA_NEXt (Interreg VI-B NEXT BSB Programme) (serving as project Coordinator), as well as a seismic risk assessment project for the Region of Attica (2021–2024). He is the author or co-author of more than 50 scientific publications in journals and conference proceedings, and serves as a reviewer for international scientific journals.
