About us…

The Department of Civil Engineering at the International Hellenic University (IHU) offers an accredited 5-year undergraduate programme leading to an Integrated Master’s degree (Level 7 of the National and European Qualifications Framework).

The Department welcomed its first students in September 2019 (established under Law 4610/2019). In 2023, it received full compliance accreditation for its 5-year programme (HAHE Decision 36801/2023), achieving the 2nd highest score among all IHU departments. In 2024, it was formally granted Integrated Master status (Level 7, NQF/EQF, Government Gazette 3467/B/2024). Since the 2024–25 academic year, ministerial decisions have allowed Department students to transfer to Civil Engineering departments at Polytechnic Schools of other Greek universities (Government Gazette 3836/B/2024 and 3487/B/2025).

Admission to the Department is through the national university entrance examinations (Panhellenic Examinations), in line with standard practice for all Greek higher education institutions. Since the introduction of minimum entry score requirements in 2021, the Department’s entry base score has risen by more than 45% cumulatively over the period 2020–2025, reflecting a consistent upward trend.

The Department’s mission is to advance knowledge, promote the science of Civil Engineering, and deepen expertise in the design and construction of engineering works, with respect for people and the environment. Studies focus on the sustainable development, resilience, and viability of the built environment, the economy and soundness of structural works, and the cutting-edge technologies involved in their study, design, and construction.

The 5-year programme aims to produce high-calibre graduates fully equipped to practise across the breadth of Civil Engineering. The curriculum is organised into four specialisation tracks: Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, and Hydraulic Engineering. The programme is completed with a Diploma Thesis and includes an internship placement (for further details, see the Programme of Studies). The Department’s overarching goal is to cultivate critical thinking, research skills, scientific rigour, and the capacity for interdisciplinary collaboration in its students and graduates.

The Department is equally committed to supporting and advancing scientific research, building partnerships, and establishing international collaborations in cutting-edge research areas. This includes promoting the mobility of undergraduate and postgraduate students, teaching staff, and academic personnel, and fostering cooperation between academic units with shared research interests, both in Greece and abroad (for further details, see Research).
