Kazantzi Athanasia

Athanasia Kazantzi holds a Diploma in Civil Engineering from Democritus University of Thrace, a Master’s degree (with distinction) from the University of Sheffield, and a PhD from the University of Surrey. Following the completion of her doctoral thesis — which she finished in three years — she worked as a Civil Engineer at a UK consultancy firm, responsible for the design and review of specialist engineering projects.

She has also worked in the research division of a Swiss company and as a Research Associate at the University of Birmingham. She has an active research profile, with publications in peer-reviewed journals, conference presentations and extensive participation in national, European and international research programmes. Notable collaborations include the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) Foundation and the Applied Technology Council (ATC); she has also served as Principal Investigator on research projects funded by Greece and the European Union.

In 2024, one of her publications received an award in the “Research” category from IStructE – Midland Counties (UK). Since 2024 she has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the International Hellenic University, where she specialises in the performance assessment of steel structures and critical infrastructure under seismic and multiple hazard scenarios. Since September 2025 she has been Director of the officially established University Laboratory of Structural Engineering and Architecture – SEAL.
