Drosopoulos George

Georgios Drosopoulos holds a Diploma in Civil Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA, 2002) and a PhD from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Ioannina (2006). He carried out postdoctoral research at the University of Hannover and the Technical University of Crete (2012–2015). He served as Assistant and Associate Professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (2016–2020), where he retains an Honorary Associate Professor position to date. In 2016 he established the Structural and Computational Mechanics research group.

In 2018 and 2019 he received awards for best lecturer and academic excellence. He also worked as a Lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire, UK (2020–2024). His research activity is in the field of structural and computational mechanics, with applications of modern numerical methods including artificial intelligence and digital twins, material failure laws, contact mechanics, multiscale analysis, and composite and nanomaterial mechanics under static and dynamic loading.

He has served as principal supervisor for 3 completed doctoral theses and is currently supervising or co-supervising 4 ongoing PhD projects. He is the author of a book (Taylor & Francis) and numerous papers in international peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. In 2024 he organised a mini-symposium at the World Congress on Computational Mechanics (Vancouver, Canada).

He has participated in a significant number of research programmes and serves as a reviewer for scientific journals, doctoral theses and research proposals. He welcomes prospective PhD candidates in his areas of research.
