Course Contents

• Introduction to bridge engineering. Types of bridges. Construction methods
• Elements of bridges. Abutments. Superstructure. Joints and bearings. Bridge foundations.
• Design actions for road bridges in accordance with the Eurocodes. Seismic behavior of bridges.
Basic design principles against earthquakes.
• Design of bridge abutments (modeling, analysis, and dimensioning)
• Design of bridge superstructures (modeling, analysis, and dimensioning)
• Design of small engineering structures, culverts, retaining works, etc

Educational Goals

Upon successful completion of the course, students are expected to:
1. Understand the basic principles governing the structural system, the formation of the
superstructure and the foundation of bridges
2. Be familiar with the regulatory framework for bridge design
3. Know the types of bridges and their application field
4. Calculate the design actions for road bridges according to the Eurocodes (traffic loads, wind loads,
seismic actions, etc.).
5. Model, analyze and dimension bridge piers and decks
6. Be able to design small-scale engineering works such as culverts, retaining structures, etc.

Παρουσίαση διαλέξεων με χρήση Η/Υ (παρουσιάσεις, φωτογραφίες, βίντεο πειραμάτων, κτλ).

Χρήση της ηλεκτρονικής πλατφόρμας elearning με αναρτήσεις εκπαιδευτικού υλικού σε ηλεκτρονική μορφή και αλληλεπίδραση με τους φοιτητές.

Ανάθεση εργασιών και ηλεκτρονική υποβολή τους μέσω της πλατφόρμας elearning.

Βοηθήματα και παραδείγματα επίλυσης προβλημάτων και ασκήσεων μέσω αυτοματοποιημένων διαδικασιών (jupyter notebooks, excel, κ.α.)

Students Evaluation

1. Assignment of tasks aimed at exploring the understanding
of the concepts taught.
2. Final written exam at the end of the semester (in Greek).
3. Each student is given the opportunity to review their
written exam and have their mistakes analyzed.
