In 1983, the Department of Structural Works was established within the School of Technological Applications of the Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Serres, offering students a 4-year programme of studies leading to a degree in Civil Structural Engineering (Technological Education track). Almost two decades later, in 2001, under Law 2916, the Department began operating as a Higher Education Institution of Technological Education. Approximately a decade after that, in 2013, it was renamed the Department of Civil Engineers (TE) & Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineers (TE), merging with the former Department of Geoinformatics and Surveying. Within this joint structure, at the TEI of Central Macedonia (the renamed TEI of Serres), the Department operated in practice as an independent unit \u2014 the Civil Engineering (TE) track \u2014 listed separately in the university entrance examination application system.<\/p>\n
Six years later, in 2019, the most significant change in the Department’s history took place: under Law 4610, the Department of Civil Engineering was established within the International Hellenic University (IHU), a full university-level institution. Following a complete restructuring of the undergraduate programme, redesigned from the ground up in line with the curricula of Civil Engineering departments at Polytechnic Schools of Greek universities, the newly founded IHU Department of Civil Engineering introduced a 5-year programme with four specialisation tracks (for further details, see Programme of Studies).<\/p>\n
Today, the Department of Civil Engineering at the International Hellenic University (IHU), holding full compliance accreditation for its 5-year programme (HAHE Decision 36801\/2023), having been granted Integrated Master status (Level 7 of the National and European Qualifications Framework, Government Gazette 3467\/B\/2024), and now offering students the possibility of transferring to Civil Engineering departments at Polytechnic Schools of other Greek universities (Government Gazette 3836\/B\/2024 and 3487\/B\/2025), continues its path in meeting the requirement for 5-year university-level Civil Engineering studies of the highest standard (for further details about the Department today, see Profile).<\/p>\n
