It includes the necessary teaching material for\r\nunderstanding the treatment of natural water towards the production of high quality water through\r\npurification processes and methods and the analysis of wastewater treatment processes, as well as\r\nthe design of relative projects.\r\nLectures\u2019 content:\r\no The hydrological cycle. Groundwater, surface water, seawater. Water consumption.\r\no Water quality characteristics (physico-chemical and microbiological parameters). Legislative\r\nframework. Water pollution \u2013 contamination. Protection measures.\r\no Groundwater and surface water treatment processes. Standard treatment, advanced\r\ntreatment.\r\no Water treatment plants: Flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, adsorption, disinfection, water\r\nstorage and distribution.\r\no Typical wastewater treatment system. Preliminary and primary treatment. General principles of\r\nwastewater and sludge treatment.\r\no Introduction to the activated sludge model (organic carbon removal and nitrification). Aeration\r\ntank design criteria. Sedimentation tank design and operation.\r\no Analysis of sludge treatment processes. Sludge thickening (gravity thickeners, mechanical\r\nthickeners). Sludge stabilisation (aerobic and anaerobic digestion). Sludge dewatering.
